The term political left is sometimes applied to describe a liberal or a Democrat. Historically a liberal was a person who believed in the rights of the individual. They believed in a capitalist spirit, after all this is the USA where a person can become rich if they believe in their dreams. With the current economic recession, there are a lot of people who believe that those on the political right will likely support the capitalistic principle at the expense of common people's pensions and stock holdings.

For example various conservatives think that each individual must be responsible for their very own healthcare, schooling etc. After all if others can succeed why can't everyone?
